Consumers are increasingly asking if the brands they trust are “sustainable” – that is, produced under acceptable social, economic, and environmental practices. Companies have responded by setting targets for becoming “100% sustainable”. However, traditional approaches for verifying sustainability face challenges in reaching farmers that are too small, too remote, or informally organized. Enveritas (www.enveritas.org) is building solutions for smallholder coffee farmers that are currently beyond the reach of existing sustainability certification or verification approaches. We have developed a rigorous, scalable, and transparent method of verification that works in this “underserved space.” This verification is the backbone of our Responsible Sourcing platform that helps companies meet their sustainability targets by investing in the areas that need it most.

Summary:

Enveritas is a non-profit that offers a new model of verifying sustainability in the coffee and cocoa sector. We have a diverse, global team with diverse backgrounds in sustainable agriculture, management consulting, banking, technology, data science, and public policy. We cover 26 coffee-producing countries. We are looking for a Junior Data Analyst to join our team. The Junior Data Analyst will be managing, analyzing, and cleaning data on a real-time basis, providing feedback to field teams, and collaborating with members of the Enveritas’ Africa team and global team. The Junior Data Analyst will also perform ad-hoc data analysis to monitor the quality of surveys and help manage and coordinate field team logistics. This person will mainly help with operational work in Uganda and can generate and execute new opportunities in the region.

Position Description

Enveritas is looking for a temporary, high-potential JDA to support our field work during Ethiopia’s coffee harvest, from September to February. The position is based in Addis Ababa with travel to major coffee regions. The JDA will support Enveritas’ Data and Insights Analyst to coordinate and analyze survey data from the field teams. The JDA is responsible for coordinating teams’ daily Quality Control sessions and ensuring teams are correctly and appropriately collecting data. The JDA will also perform daily data analyses to monitor the quality of surveys and help manage and coordinate field team logistics. In addition, the JDA will support training sessions for field coordinators and enumerators, which requires an intimate knowledge of the content of Enveritas’ coffee survey and survey tools. This is an entry-level role, but we are looking for a profile with very strong potential, who can take on increasing responsibility, and run advanced analyses while keeping the focus on key questions and not losing sight of the big picture. We offer a fun, open, and agile work environment. You will report to a small team of international and local staff and have the backing of a global team with deep experience in sustainability, technology, operations, and stakeholder management.

  • Willingness to occasionally work in rural areas and willingness to work longer-than-usual days including Saturdays during the survey period (September – January) as required to support the field teams
  • Quick learner (i.e. need to learn our internal data analysis tools and rapidly produce impactful results)
  • Excellent verbal and written proficiency in English and Amharic. Afan Oromo, Sidamo, or Gedeo languages are a plus.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and an effective team player
  • Experience with coffee farming is advantageous but not required
