Job Description

The Ethiopia Media Women Association (EMWA) was established in 1999 and re-registered in 2019 as per Article 85 of the CSO Proclamation No.1113/2019. EMWA is a professional association that aims to empower women in and through the media. It works to build the capacity of its members who are female media professionals and advance gender equality and equity in media. It implements research-based advocacy, resource mobilization as well as partnership and coordination to attain its vision.

Purpose of the role:

The Executive Director is a senior management position and is responsible for facilitating coordination among EMWA members, the Executive Board and regional committees, and external key stakeholders. The coordination entails ensuring effective information exchange, as well as representing and advocating common positions and agreed interests of EMWA, women, CSO’s sector, and the wider public. The Executive Director is responsible for overseeing and managing all aspects of the organization. This includes setting strategic goals, making critical decisions, management of the secretariat of the association, coordinating its members, events, and programs, and providing leadership to project management. The role requires a strong commitment to promoting gender equality in the media industry and a passion for making a difference. In addition, the Executive Director is expected to manage effective and regular communication with EMWA’s Executive Board. The Executive Director supports the work of the association through the following key tasks:

Strategic management and oversight of the EMWA Secretariat

  • Strategic day-to-day management of EMWA’s secretariat office, budget, and relationship with the principal donor and members.
  • Provide leadership and direction, promote professional working relationships, and encourage EMWA secretariat’s staff.
  • Lead and conduct the regular statutory requirements like annual plans, reports and audits and present it to the members during the general assembly.
  • Conduct regular performance appraisals identifying capacity-building needs and further career objectives; follow up and maintain updated job descriptions.
  • Works closely with the association's executive board members to ensure compliance with legal and regulatory requirements, as well as effective governance practices.
  • Support the executive board to develop strategic annual priorities and engage closely with them to ensure the secretariat functions in line with these.
  • Oversee the development, implementation, and evaluation of programs and initiatives aimed at supporting women in media and through the media.
  • Overseeing the association's budget, fundraising efforts, and financial sustainability to ensure the effective implementation of programs and activities.
  • Supervise fundraising efforts, including grant writing, donor cultivation, and sponsorship development.
  • Monitor the effectiveness and impact of the organization's programs and initiatives, adjusting as needed to achieve desired outcomes.
  • Prepare regular reports for the board of directors and funders on the organization's activities and achievements. Advocacy and communication
  • Advocate for the advancement of women in media and through the media and engagement with policymakers and industry stakeholders.
  • Monitor and respond to developments affecting women and women media practitioners. Represent the organization in various forums.
  • Advocate for the rights and interests of women journalists, promoting ethical and professional journalism practices. • Maintain strong partner relations and engage in the identification of new potential partners.
  • Oversee the association's communications strategy, ensuring clear and consistent messaging to members, the media, and the public.
  • Serve as the association's spokesperson, representing its views and positions to the media and other audiences.
  • Oversee the association's website and social media presence, promoting its activities and engaging with members and the public.
  • Engage with association members, understanding their needs and interests, and ensuring that they are supported through the association's activities and resources.
  • Foster a sense of community and belonging among members through networking events, mentorship programs, and other initiatives.
  • Develop and maintain partnerships and collaborations with government stakeholders, donors, academic institutions, and the media to enhance program effectiveness.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum five years of progressive national and/or international experience working with NGOs, academic institutions, intergovernmental organizations, networks and associations,
  • Postgraduate qualifications in Management, Development leadership, or related social sciences. Advanced degree preferred.
  • Strong understanding of issues related to gender equality and diversity in the media industry.
  • Experience in strategic planning, program development, and financial management.
  • Demonstrated leadership and management skills,
  • Documented skills in developing proposals, budgets, and reports,
  • Significant experience in the development of advocacy, policy, and key messaging documents.
  • Strong understanding of the government system, Agency for Civil Society Organizations (ACSO), CSOs, the private sector, and international principles of development.
  • Proven communication, public speaking, interpersonal and negotiation skills,
  • Excellent computer literacy.
  • Fluency in written and spoken Amharic and English is required,
