Impacc is looking for a business enthusiast with strong user-centered design skills to analyze innovative social businesses and develop ideas for digital solutions to help them scale.

We’re a distributed team all over Africa and Europe with centers in Addis, Ethiopia, Nairobi, Kenya, and Hamburg, Germany. You will work closely with the COO, who is developing and consulting our joint-ventures, and the CTO, who is leading the digital platform team. Ideally, you will be located in Addis Ababa, but the job can be done remotely with a willingness to travel frequently within Subsaharan Africa.

About us

Impacc is an international social business NGO that creates green jobs for poor people in fragile states. We invest in innovative businesses that have the potential to create local, green jobs, and help them scale, often with a franchise approach. The next step for Impacc is to digitize our model in order to make it scalable. We want to standardize and disseminate business processes to allow our franchisees to go from prototype to scale, quickly. A key aspect of our approach to achieving sustainable growth is to apply design principles, agile methodologies, and modern technology to develop tailored business solutions with the socio-economic context in mind. Your Role

You are playing a key role in defining Impacc’s digital scaling solutions strategy at the intersection between business and technology: the development of a digital scaling platform for micro-franchises in bottom-of-pyramid markets. The scaling platform is designed to be a one-stop-shop for building, sustaining, and growing micro-franchises - in an intuitive, locally customized way. It gives franchisees all the tools they need to build their own small businesses and create jobs.
Specifically, you will:

  • Analyze business and production processes, extracting the most impactful areas for optimization in collaboration with consultants and venture staff
  • Do ethnographic research and user research (e.g. interview and observe people involved in the business processes) to uncover frictions and opportunities and validate hypothesis in the respective context
  • Develop ideas for digital solutions to support growth (new tools or features, optimizations, and standardization/automation)
  • Design and implement prototypes together with the digital platform team
  • Validate prototypes and solutions by conducting user tests, tracking user interactions, etc
  • Document and proactively share findings with the team

Your Profile

You love to identify the most pressing problems and to solve them in creative and pragmatic ways. You quickly turn your ideas into reality using whatever tool does the job (pen and paper, Google Sheets, Facebook pages...) and convince others with data.

  • 2+ years of relevant job experience
  • University degree or equivalent education
  • Strong analytical and conceptual thinking skills
  • Empathetic and the ability to quickly understand someone else’s context
  • Experience with qualitative and quantitative research methods and documentation
  • formats such as Journey Maps
  • Experience with designing processes and digital experiences in a user-centered way
  • Strong interest in using digital tools to create solutions
  • Experience working in a startup environment with agile methodologies
  • Strong communication skills, translating between contexts and continents
  • Self-driven “take-the-lead” mindset

What we offer

Be part of an innovative and growing team. You will closely collaborate with the venture team based in Ethiopia, Kenya, and Uganda. You will work where development and business meet. We need you to be with the ventures in the field, as well as in constant online contact with our international team. You will work self-responsible, but networking constantly with colleagues in Africa and Germany. Work performance will be judged on results. We want you to grow into the job, based on a very good performance, your responsibilities will increase with time.
