The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) seeks to recruit a research fellow to work in the Veterinary Public Health in low- and middle-income countries project.

ILRI works to improve food and nutritional security and reduce poverty in developing countries through research for efficient, safe and sustainable use of livestock. It is the only one of 15 CGIAR research centers dedicated entirely to animal agriculture research for the developing world. Co-hosted by Kenya and Ethiopia, it has regional or country offices and projects in East, South and Southeast Asia as well as Central, East, Southern and West Africa.

This is a one-year research fellowship position within the Animal and Human Health Program at ILRI. The fellow is expected to support a range of research projects within the veterinary public health domain. A detailed plan of activities will be developed upon arrival to ILRI and revised every 3 months to accommodate changes in the ongoing projects.

Project title:  Veterinary Public Health in low- and middle-income countries

Key responsibilities:

The nature of the work will depend on the projects that s/he will effectively support, but these are likely to include:

  • UrbanMarkets: pull-push project: value chain mapping (poultry and vegetable value chains) in Ethiopia.
  • TARTARE project: estimation of foodborne related health burden.

The fellow will be assigned specific responsibilities within each of the projects. These will include:

  • Supporting design of research projects.
  • Design and implement fieldwork activities and, at times, supervising teams of junior staff.
  • Data analysis and report/publication writing, including from past projects.
  • Work with national and international partners towards the achievement of the project objectives.
  • Give seminars and presentations within ILRI as agreed.
  • Support, within his/her capacities, the capacity development of junior research staff in the program.
  • Deliver in all pre-agreed deliverables based on the plan of activities developed at the beginning of the fellowship.

Position Requirements:

  1. A degree in Veterinary Medicine, agriculture or related field.
  2. Master of Science or equivalent degree would be an advantage.
  3. Evidence of relevant experience in research.
  4. Strong quantitative skills.
  5. Good command of written and spoken English.
  6. Current European College of Veterinary Public Health (ECVPH) residents are encouraged to apply.

Duration: 12 months

Terms of appointment and stipend:

  • Accommodation will be provided in ILRI Campus, Addis Ababa – the project pays for this, correct? If Yes, the change to: The project will provide accommodation within ILRI Campus, Addis Ababa.
  • A monthly stipend to cover living expenses.
  • Medical insurance for the fellowship duration.
