Job Description

Ipas is a non-profit making organization working to improve women’s lives by focusing on improving access to information and services for basic sexual and reproductive health across the globe. Since the year 2000, Ipas Ethiopia has been collaborating with the Ministry of Health (MOH), Regional Health Bureaus (RHBs), Community-Based Organizations (CBOs), and various local and international partners to reduce maternal mortality and morbidity resulting from unwanted pregnancy and unsafe abortion.

In light of the need to strengthen our relationship with stakeholders and expedite program implementation, we are planning to hire the following positions:-

Position Purpose and Summary of Responsibilities

The Gender Advisor is expected to contribute to the development and delivery of a high-quality program focused on the commitment to ensuring that women and men with limited resources can also benefit from development efforts. The Gender Advisor will contribute to achieving the strategic objectives and provide gender advice throughout Ipas Ethiopia’s work and will work with teams to ensure that gender equality is safeguarded in these areas. It will carry out analytical and advocacy works and will have responsibility for managing partnerships that implement specific measures, in particular in the field of gender-based violence.

Specific Responsibilities

The Gender Advisor should contribute to achieving objectives and results set out in Ipas Ethiopia’s Strategic Framework, leading to the development, coordination, implementation, and monitoring of the Ipas gender plan, with priority to ensuring that women's health and economic empowerment are advanced through Ipas's rural SRHR program and contributing to an effective national and local response to gender-based violence.

Responsibilities, Functions, and Specific Tasks

  • Monitor and analyze gender developments at national and international levels, aligning where necessary, such changes to Ipas strategy and programs.
  • Work within the country team, in particular community engagement and health system strengthening teams, to ensure that sound gender analysis informs the design and management of the program and identify strategic actions to be undertaken to improve the quality of program implementation.
  • Manage gender-specific programs in accordance with Ipas Ethiopia policies, standards and agreements.
  • Provide technical assistance to partners in assessing the strength of their approach to gender integration throughout the program cycle.
  • Provide advice on appropriate gender-sensitive indicators in the framework for measuring performance and support colleagues in monitoring and communicating program results/outcomes against agreed indicators.
  • Monitor and report on the implementation of the Gender Transformative Action Plan.
  • Develop and maintain positive working relationships with a wide network of partners, including Government, development partners, parliament, media, and NGOs.
  • Represent Ipas Ethiopia at meetings of government and/or relevant partners and prepare reports and policy materials for the Country Director and Ipas Global as needed.
  • Assume other responsibilities that can be assigned on occasion, including contributing to Ipas Ethiopia communications and events.

Terms of employment: One year with possibilities for extension

Job Requirements

Position Requirements

  • A deep commitment to sexual and reproductive health and rights, especially access to safe abortion and contraception.
  • Professional fluency in Amharic and English (speaking, reading, and writing), and communication skills in other local languages is a plus.
  • Proven ability to lead and motivate teams and create a positive work environment, including through solidarity supervision, strong communication, non-hierarchical leadership approaches, and modeling of core Ipas values.
  • Proven ability to build positive working relationships with diverse internal teams and external partners.

Qualifications, skills, and experience

  • Experience in management, evaluation, and monitoring of project cycles.
  • An influential style of communication, with excellent written and verbal skills in Amharic and English.

Education

  • A Bachelor’s Degree qualification in Sociology, Psychology or other relevant fields is essential. A postgraduate degree in gender, economic empowerment, or rural livelihoods is highly desirable.

Experience

  •  A minimum of six years of relevant work experience managing a gender portfolio.
  • Knowledge and understanding of institutional, legal, and political frameworks at national and local levels that have an impact on the status of women in Ethiopia.
  • Evidence of good analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to network effectively, with the ability to develop a wide range of relevant contacts.

Work environment:

Ability to travel up to 30% nationally (with occasional regional or global travel, if applicable).
