Amref Health Africa was founded in 1957 and has since grown to become the largest African-based international health development organization, currently implementing more than 150 programs that directly reach more than 20 million people across 35 countries in Africa. Headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya, Amref has fully-fledged offices in Ethiopia, Guinea, Ivory Coast, Kenya, Malawi, Tanzania, Uganda, Senegal, South Sudan, and Zambia; eleven advocacy and fundraising offices in Europe and North America; and a st aff complement of over 1,500.

The Ethiopia Country office is registered in 2002 and operational for more than two decades. Currently, we are operational in all regions of Ethiopia with more than 300 staffs and wide portfolio of PHC, RMNCAYH -N, Youth Development, WASH and DPC including NTDs. ABOUT INTEGRATED HEALTH SYSTEMS STRENGTHENING (HSS) PROJECT

Integrated Health System Strengthening Project is a Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) investment currently being implemented with Amref Health Africa and MOH to support the design and implementation of a platform mechanism/s for health systems strengthening for primary health care (PHC) in Ethiopia. This investment focuses primarily on the sub-national level (regional and district) with links to national efforts. The design will focus on integration of key HSS pillars – e.g., Human Resources for Health (HRH), Health Care Financing (HCF), Data, and Leadership and Governance – to support PHC administrators and managers toward optimizing health systems for improved service delivery.

Role Description

The HSS interns are expected to be part of the HSS project internship program. They will play a vital role in supporting various teams within HSS to deliver various project activities. They will get guidance and capacity-building support across the different core functions within the project. The project aims to build interns’ technical and leadership capabilities and make them future leaders and technical experts. We want to hire professional interns willing to learn new things and grow their careers in the non-profit health sector.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support country office staff working in project technical implementation (50% of the time), operations and leadership (25% of the time) and monitoring and evaluation (25% of the time) 
  • Participate in the review of proposals, research tools, guidelines, and other documents prepared by/for the project
  • Conduct basic research on HSS-related topics as requested by program teams
  • Support in the preparation and review of various documents
  • Organize meetings, events, and other engagements as assigned by the mentor/supervisor
  • Prepare meeting notes and briefs of various project engagements
  • Update/input project data and information into AIMS regularly
  • Participate in capacity-building activities and events facilitated by the program or Amref
  • Undertake any other assignments given by the project staff

Qualifications and Competencies:

  • MD or University degree in social sciences, development, public health, project planning and management or other relevant fields.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English
  • Basic computer skills
  • Organization skills
  • Good team player and values diversity
  • Ability to prioritize and multi-task
  • Passion for bringing lasting change in health in Africa and a desire to create a positive social impact.
