1. Background

The Hailemariam & Roman Foundation (HRF) is a non-profit international NGO established by the Former Prime Minister of Ethiopia, H.E. Mr. Hailemariam Dessalegn & the Former First Lady of Ethiopia, H.E. Mrs. Roman Tcsfaye. It strives to support the efforts of government, communities, and partners in bringing socio-economic transformation in Ethiopia and the broader Horn of Africa. With three of its programmatic focus areas- maternal & child health and nutrition, climate-smart conservation and ecotourism, and economic empowerment of women and youth synergizing each other, the foundation envision seeing"A healthy and economically empowered community in a well-conserved environment." Geographically, its support focuses on areas with the highest disparities where the foundation could add value.

2. Roles and responsibilities of the Communication and Advocacy Officer

The Communication and Advocacy Officer will be accountable to the CEO of the Foundation and shall have the following roles and responsibilities: -

  • Write, edit, and oversee the production of publications, including articles, newsletters, reports, photos, infographics, and success stories;
  • Collaborate as required with the broader Hailemariam & Roman Foundation team on the development of up-to-date strategic communication and advocacy plan that includes participation in key events, targeted communications materials development, and other strategies as defined in the plan;
  • Establish and implement standard operating procedures and mechanisms for collection and distribution of information and knowledge materials from staff and stakeholders;
  • Organize and host webinars and learning events;
  • Write speeches for the Founders as the need arises, whenever they participate at varying events, on topics related to the thematic areas of the Foundation. 
  • Provide advice and assistance to chiefs of programs on activities that are related to communications and advocacy. 
  • Prepare promotional materials, such as brochures, flyers, short videos, etc. upon the request of the Foundation's management, working toward the goal of building a successful brand for the Foundation.
  • Initiate working relationships with media houses, which share the Foundations values, to support the Foundation's promotional needs as they arise. 
  • Manage and standardize the social media and online presence of the Foundation

3. Requirements

3.1. Educational

BA or advanced degree from a recognized university in communications, public relations, journalism, literature, or related fields

3.2. Work Experience

At least seven or more years experience in undertaking, managing, or leading communication activities in organizations working at national or international levels.

3.3.Competencies

  • Excellent English verbal, written, and presentation skills;
  • Excellent attention to detail and track record of designing and implementing dynamic communications and knowledge management strategies.
  • Detail-oriented and deadline-driven with strong organizational skills, and the ability to work in a dynamic and agile environment with changing requirements and priorities;
  • Strong cross-cultural, interpersonal, management, diplomacy, and collaboration skills in highly complex structures involving multiple teams and stakeholders; 0
  • Ability to meet deadlines under extreme pressure, build consensus, engage a variety of stakeholders, and work with diverse groups of people;
  • Video editing and/or graphic design skills preferred;
  • Relevant computer software skills (including, at a minimum, the standard applications in MS Office).

4. Place of work:

At HRF head-office in Addis Ababa with frequent travels to South West of Ethiopia

5. Salary and benefits:

Salary based on the Foundation's scale with pension benefits and income taxes according to the applicable Ethiopian laws.

6. Duration of contract: for one year with the possibility of extension.
