Job Summary

Under the supervision of the Optometry team Instructor, the Intern Optometrists shall learn how to examining, diagnosing and treating parts of the visual system.

Detail Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Learn about how to Listen  and address patient’s questions and concerns
  • Participate in Educating patients regarding the eye care and vision correction options, visual hygiene, lighting arrangements and safety factors
  • Train on how to Utilize all necessary equipment properly, ensuring it is in good working order
  • Record all tests, prescriptions, and treatments in the patient chart
  • Train on how to Conduct eye examinations by:-
    • Inspection of the external appearance of the eyes, the eyelids, the lashes and the skin surrounding the eye
    • Visual acuity testing;
    • Objective refraction using an auto-refractor
    • Take intraocular pressure using tonometry
    • Measure the curvature and reflection of the anterior surface of the cornea using a keratometer
    • Determine eye length for calculation of intraocular lens power using A-Scan ultrasound biometry
    • Produce a two- dimensional, Cross-sectional view of the eye and the orbit using B-Scan ultrasonography
    • Asses the peripheral field using Humphrey vision Field,
    • Starting IVs for fluorescein angiography to evaluate the blood circulation in the retina using the fund's Photo camera
    • Doing Optical Coherence Tomography
  • Learn how to use lensometers to determine current lens prescriptions for clients.
  • Train on how to develop knowledge & skill with all equipment & instruments and their proper usage
  • Clean and avail or ready all medical equipment needed for  optometry service
  • Work closely with the ophthalmologist, nursing  & optical staff
  • Learn how to use measuring devices to take client measurements including bridge and eye sizes, vertex distance, pupillary distance, temple length, optical eye centers for sizes for eyeglasses.
  • Train on how to understand the coordination of frames and eye measurements to the optical prescription
  • Participate in how to educate and counsel patients on care of glasses,
  • Communicates appropriately using good interpersonal skills.
  • Participate in staff development and training activities.
  • Assist in the optical shop when required
  • Perform other duties as assigned by immediate supervisor.
