About the Ethiopian Red Cross Society

The Ethiopian Red Cross Society (ERCS) was established in 1935 and is one of the oldest and largest humanitarian organizations in Ethiopia. ERCS provides services to communities affected by natural and manmade disasters through the provision of emergency responses, ambulance and first aid, family reunification, essential drugs, water and sanitation, and other humanitarian services. ERCS also runs disaster risk reduction programs to create resilient households and communities. Currently, the ERCS has a structure consisting of 12 Regional Offices, 34 Zonal Branches, and 131 District/Woreda Branches and 599 Woreda Red Cross Committees, and 5871 Kebele Red Cross Committees.

Job Summary

Under the supervision of the Manager, Support Service, the Driver Mechanic gets the vehicle inspected annually; complies with traffic regulations and time schedules; transports medicines to customers and renders other freight transport service to the health and pharmaceutical services; keeps the vehicle in good running order and makes minor break maintenances and repairs; keeps a record of departure, arrival, mileage covered and fuel consumed and other pertinent records.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Checks the vehicle for oil gauges, tires, fuel, and water and ensures that the vehicle is in a proper functioning order;
  2. Transports medicines and other related supplies to customers and renders other freight transport service to health and pharmaceutical services;
  3. Keeps vehicle in good running order and makes minor break maintenances and repairs;
  4. Keeps a record of departure, arrival, mileage covered and fuel consumed, and other pertinent records;
  5. Removes dust, washes, and cleans the vehicle he/she is entrusted with;
  6. Ensures at all times that there is enough fuel in the tank and checks on the level of oil and water and does refilling as needed;
  7. Ascertains that all tools and other accessories for the vehicle are handy and functional;
  8. Complies with traffic regulations and time schedules;
  9. Replaces flat tires, spare parts and gets them repaired;
  10. Makes sure that the carloads are within permissible limit;
  11. Gets the vehicle washed, lubricated, inspected, and maintained regularly;
  12. Gets his/her driving license renewed as per regulations;
  13. Reports malfunctions or defects beyond his/her ability on the vehicle to superior for corrective actions;
  14. Assists with loading and unloading;
  15. Gets the vehicle inspected annually;
  16. Performs other duties and responsibilities related to the job as assigned by the Operation

Qualification and Expirence

Job Specification

  • TVET level II in Auto Motive Technology/Auto Mechanic/, 10th or 12th grade completed and 4th grade/equivalent Heavy Truck Driving License,
  • 4/6 years relevant Work experience
