Background

The Environment, Forest and Climate Change Commission is working in partnership with Ethiopia to achieve its ambitious economic growth targets through the implementation of the Climate Resilient Green Economy Strategy (CRGE) and by transforming the nation’s forest sector with the National Forest Sector Development Program (NFSDP). The NFSDP aims to reduce deforestation and increase afforestation to catalyze GDP growth, generate employment, contribute to self-sufficiency in forest products and enhance ecosystem services and promote sustainable forest management. 
 
The commission has also established a Forest Sector Transformation Unit (FSTU) to create transformational change by unlocking and attracting investment, through developing partnerships, supporting the establishment and development of large-scale conservation zones, exploring private-public partnerships. The FSTU also seeks to improve the coordination and cross-sectoral collaboration through strategic communication and by advocating for strong monitoring instruments and standards of accountability. 
 
Duties and Responsibilities
 
UNDP is looking for a communication intern to support FSTU to develop various communication materials. Specifically, the intern will be responsible for, but not limited to the following:
  • Support the preparation of communication materials for the Forest Sector Transformation Unit in Ethiopia;
  • Carry out necessary review and research work for ongoing and upcoming project activities;
  • Assist with relevant data collection and background research;
  • Assist with analysis of preliminary data;
  • Assist with identifying key documents and conducting stakeholder analysis; 
  • Assist with review of inception and draft reports for data accuracy;
  • Synthesize consultant’s study reports and findings into concise policy briefs for donors and other relevant stakeholders;
  • Assistance in updating communication materials, such as presentations, briefs and other materials related to the evaluation of the sector’s programmes;
  • Support to produce communication materials for the Forest day;
  • Edit and revise relevant communications materials;
  • Any other relevant tasks as required.
Deliverables:
  • The intern will support producing and finalize at least two communication materials per month including reviewing and synthesizing reports and documents.

Required Skills and Experience

Education: 
 
Candidates must meet one of the following educational requirements:
  • Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
  • Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent);
  • Have graduated with a university degree (as defined in (a) and (b) above) and, if selected, must start the internship within one-year of graduation.
Field of study:
  • Environmental policies, natural sciences, political sciences, social sciences, cultural studies, international development, or other similar subjects at the university level;
  • Good knowledge and experience in reviewing and synthesizing documents;
  • Good writing skill for publishing communication materials;
  • Any experience of the Ethiopian context will be an advantage.
Language skills:
  • Excellent communication skills (written and oral) in English are required; 
  • Strong writing and editing skills, attention to conceptual accuracy and use of proper terminology;
  • Working knowledge of another UN language is an advantage.
Intern Requirements:
  • Applicants should indicate which months they are available part and/or full time and when they complete their studies;
  • UNDP internship programme does a monthly stipend for the internship period;
  • All the expenses connected with the internship will be borne by the intern, sponsoring Government or institution;
  • UNDP accepts no responsibility for costs arising from accidents and/or illness or death incurred during the internship;
  • The intern is responsible for obtaining necessary visas and arranging travel to and from the duty station where the internship will be performed;
  • Interns are not eligible to apply for, or be appointed to, any post in UNDP during the period of the internship;
  • The intern must provide proof of enrollment in a health insurance plan;
  • Interns are not staff members and may not represent UNDP in any official capacity;
  • The Intern is expected to work full time but flexibility is allowed for his/her education programme;
  • The intern will have to obtain financing for subsistence and make his/her own arrangements for internship, travel, VISA, accommodation, etc.;
